September 29 - October 3, 2011 - Glaswegians and Wizard School

The five day break from London was beautiful! On our coache trip we stopped by Kendall - a small town in which many writers of classic poetry, novels, and plays lived.  I enjoyed myself immensely but I missed climbing the hill to the castle ruins TT.TT.  However, the town itself was adorable and much worth an hour stop to stretch the legs and eat.

After Kendall we arrived to the Premiere Inn in Glasgow - which is really close to the bad part of town. Myself and A.S. ended up walking the streets of the Left Side of Town! We were pretty much able to find our way back to near our hotel and take a 3 pound taxi ride back! That night was really fun cause myself and girls went out!

Along with our exploration, we were allowed to go to the Art Gallery at Glasgow University and see selected letters from Whistler (the painter) as well as a gold-leafed and gilded manuscript from the early Renaissance. It was amazing see an old book in such good condition - as well as the front cover and first page of a William Blake collection of poetry.

The portraits and artworks within the gallery - including the exhibition house - modeled after the museum's founders home was an experience, although the second floor was closed off for construction. In all Glasgow and the people living there are nice- although the city is known as rough and tumble and is gritter than London. However, there is a beauty to the area - to a city that is not choked with tourist shops and sites. It was relaxing being there. They call their main musical hall the Armidillo! You can see why below. :-D

The best part of the trip was spending time in Edinburgh the home of Hogwarts and where Harry Potter was born. I missed going to the cafe J.K. Rowling wrote at TT.TT another way I failed. However, I got to see Parliament, the Royal Mile, get an outfit in my family plaid, and go to the Castle with my friends: A.S., H^2, S.D., E.J., L.N. & K.F. We ended up getting side tracked in a sweets shop where I got Sour Plooms, this delicious hard candy! I really enjoyed my time in Edinburgh and am definitely going to go back there at some point when I have more time to explore the town at a slower pace.

The trip was worth it - I seriously recommend taking the tour of Parliament. Also, if you can just browse the shops on the Royal Mile. My friends and I found a gypsy shop - complete with recorders, costume, Marti Gra beads, and MASKS :-D!

We also walked by a wedding store and saw the most beautiful dress. S.D. fell in love with it, although we told her she still had time to think about it later. :-D

After our trip was over, we piled into the coache at 6 AM and drove to Liechester. The town is beautiful and the Castle was very recently used for it's original purpose - as a prison. We walked around it and investigated the Churchyard and rolling hills near by!

But, my favorite part, was our day trip to Lochlomen. It was rainy but the experience of seeing the Loch and being on the pier in the fog reminded me a little bit of home. I got to wear my plaid and we walked along the shoreline. It was good to see a large body of water again. I miss Lake Michigan.

Well that be my adventures in Scotland! Go Stewart Clan (absorbed the Cook clan). :-D

Cheers,

~ H.C>.

  1. Hey, Nate here, aka "the-mind-of-kleinnak" on DA :).

A.) Did you see the Lochlomen Monster?! (Blackadder joke)

B.) There were not nearly enough pics of you in the cute kilt outfit (couldn't help myself for mentioning that)

C.) Please tell me you're from Illinois, Indiana or Wisconsin... because if you turn out to be a Michigander too that will just be too crazy for all the similarities we talked about!
